Artwork: Women’s Rights in India

During six weeks of Summer Institute, Nashers created powerful projects exploring the issues, identities, and stories that matter to them.

Summer Institute Newark Nasher Anya, created this piece of art as part of their final project for her core class P.I.P. (Power, Identity, and Privilege).

“My social justice issue is the lack of representation and awareness surrounding women’s rights, especially in countries like India and other developing countries. I chose this issue because I grew up in India, and I’ve seen how differently conversations about women and women’s rights can exist depending on where you are. After moving to the United States, I started noticing how much more openly people talked about feminism, equality, representation, and women’s rights.

Anya chose charcoal intentionally. It’s natural, messy, and impossible to erase completely. Her piece reminds us that stories can be treated the same way. People can try to erase the stories of women, but their traces will always remain.
