THE 2008-2009 CLASS OF ELLA FELLOWS AND PROJECTS

TSECHU DOLMA – Junior at the Renaissance Charter School. Creating a cross cultural group for Chinese and Tibetan students to explore the roots of the Sino-Tibetan conflict. The group will meet in Jackson Heights to explore historical and contemporary issues, as well as their own personal experiences with the conflict.

TANZA JONES – Graduate of NYU. Developed “African Women Speak,” a speaker series which was held at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture to highlight the stories and experiences of women from Africa and the Diaspora. In creating a forum for these voices to be heard she hopes to build momentum and a demand for these stories to be incorporated into college curriculum.

SADIA KALAM – Graduate of NYU. Creating an intergenerational, cross-cultural, women’s group. She will be working with seniors in the Edison community, and high school aged youth; and through the arts, hopes to bridge the generational gap and create oral histories.

TUNISIA MORRISON – Freshman at St. John’s University. Organizing around issues of violence in the Queens community. She will be working with 12-18 year olds to hold a “Come In Unity” Day in Roy Wilkins Park in Queens, to highlight the issue of guns and violence, as well as promote resources within the community and opportunities for leadership, college, and employment.

ELLEN SCHUBERT – Senior at Hampshire College. Creating an “Abortion Support Network” for the five college area in Massachusetts. She will be training a core group of peer advocates to provide information about reproductive health, as well as emotional support for women seeking an abortion.

C.C. SONG – Graduate of the University of Michigan. Creating an educational series to teach Asian American high school aged youth about social justice issues. Focusing on food, she will explore the social and political aspects of food and the rich organizing and activism history of Asian Americans.

KIRANDEEP TOOR – Freshman at St. John’s University. Creating a series of workshops focusing on global awareness. Working with high school aged students at her alma mater, John Adams High School in Queens, she hopes to increase participants’ awareness of international issues and their consciousness as global citizens.
