The Answers:
Who is Sadie Nash?
Sadie Nash was not famous (well, she was very briefly). Sadie Nash was born in 1871 and lived in Omaha, Nebraska. She was a community leader and poverty activist. It is in her spirit and her impulse to take action, to brush convention aside and to lead by example that has inspired her great-granddaughter, Cecilia Clarke, to establish the Sadie Nash Leadership Project (SNLP).

Are there any fees or costs to attending programs at Sadie Nash?
No. There is a stipend to pay for lunch and transportation for the Summer Institute and if a student in Nash University needs a metrocard to attend (only offered when school-issued metrocards are not valid) they can contact Nyoka at nyoka@sadienash.org.
Why does Sadie Nash exist?
The Sadie Nash Leadership Project is designed to guide you through a process in which you come to understand the importance of your life experiences, and how these experiences can be applied to taking action and making change. We believe you, as a young woman in high school, have the ability to change the world, now and in your future. The Sadie Nash Leadership Project is your opportunity to take some time and look at your own leadership, your potential leadership, and the leadership of the women around you. SNLP is about you, run by you and for you, as a leader and as a young woman.
back to questions
Who can attend Sadie Nash programs? What are the criteria for getting accepted?
The Sadie Nash Leadership Project is for young women in New York City ages 14-21. Priority is given to young women in public high schools in the City. We do not look at your grades or your skills. We do not think that is a measure of leadership. We do want young women who are interested in having an experience like SNLP and who can commit to it. We also want young women to join us who are committed to being part of a diverse community, and learning from other young women.
I need help on the application, can someone help me?
ABSOLUTELY! We want to help you fill out the application or write the essay. Just email Aisha at aisha@sadienash.org or give us a call, 718.422.8664!
What is Nash University?
It is not a real university or college but instead a free program at the Sadie Nash Leadership Project (SNLP) where young women (ages 14-21) can get together, take a class and build their leadership. You can take a class (or classes) in four different areas:
- practical skills (public speaking, college prep, etc.)
- healthy bodies and minds (stress management, yoga, etc.)
- academic & creative courses (interesting classes that you don’t get in high school), and
- leadership development (organizing, activism, etc.)

How does the Summer Institute work?
The Summer Institute requires an initial commitment of six weeks. The summer program lasts for six weeks from July 9 – August 17, 2007 Monday through Friday from 9:00am until 3:30pm (on Fridays, we have special events and the hours are different). The summer program is located in Manhattan. There will be required pre-session orientation meetings in early June to prepare you for the summer, and to provide an opportunity to meet staff and to get to know each other. During the summer you and your peers will take classes, meet women involved in different forms of leadership, take workshops on issues that are important to you, and explore your own and others’ leadership. You will receive a stipend to attend to cover the cost off lunch and subway.

Can I just do a Community Action Placement or a LAP?
The only students who can do a Community Action Placement program or the Leadership Action Projects are students who have completed our Summer Institute. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about that policy or have special circumstances you would like to discuss with us.
What is the stipend for the Summer Institute?
To help you cover your expenses (food and transportation) during the summer you will receive a stipend during the program for everyday that you are there ($8 for lunch, $4 for subway). You only receive the stipend when you are at the program because it covers those two direct costs that come with attendance.
back to questions
What is your lateness and attendance policy for the Summer Institute? SNLP does not allow more than 3 absences during the summer program. If you have valid reasons for those absences (illness, family emergency) that you did not know about prior to the summer, we will let you return to the program the following summer. SNLP requires attendance for both the strength of the community and to enhance your experience. Also, at SNLP two late arrivals counts as an absence. Please contact us if you have more questions about these policies.
What will the Summer Institute be like if I decide to join?
It will be fun, interesting, challenging, creative, and exciting. You will learn new things. You will meet amazing young women and adults. You will make friends. You will be supported, celebrated and respected. You will teach others. You will share ideas and make some of those ideas reality. You will be in a safe and respectful space where learning will be dynamic and where you will be a leader.
What happens after the summer?
You have the option of continuing in the Community Action Placement program, where you will be paid to work at an organization in the city that does something that interests you. You can also return to SNLP for a second summer, and begin work on a leadership project of your own design called a Leadership Action Project.
